In-club competition - Wednesday 9th July

Just been announced by Dave that on Wednesday 9th July there will be an inclub competition on the evening class. It will be a Gi comp and will be £5 entry plus there will be medals for the winners!

Should be good! - Especially with missing out on the Cleveland Coastal comp

Cleveland coastal cancelled

I know some guys were looking forward to this comp (Paul dreaming about it!) but the Cleveland Coastal has been canceled for good.. I guess that means Dave won the team trophy for the tournaments whole duration!

Bri's Thursday class

We had a good class from Bri on Thursday night at his new club, doing the guard passing drill and a sweep moving on to attacks from the sweep then some good sparring at the end. The new mats are excellent. 12 people turned up so it was a nice turnout too

Mundials - The Final Report

Day 7 (Sunday)

We decided to get the train to Hollywood in the morning and be tourists before going to the Mundials on the afternoon. We had a cool morning, went to the waxworks museum and wandered round Hollywood.

We didn't get to Long Beach until 3pm so it was too late to get back to the Mundials. We had a wander and found a tattoo shop that is the official oldest tattoo shop in the USA and 2nd oldest in the world. Ed Hardy used to work there. So I got a tattoo done.

Day 8 (Monday)

We had to check out early so we've been wandering round Long Beach, had dinner at Hooters and now it's about one hour until the bus picks us up for the airport and we're on our way back to sunny Britain.

We don't land back in Newcastle until 5pm tomorrow (Tuesday) so it's gonna be a long trip. Think Jez gets back just after us as his flight is 3 hours after ours.

Will see you all Friday hopefully.

Mundials Day 6

It was a good day. We met up early and went to the Mundials. Watched the brown/black belt female absolute - Kyra Gracie was kicking ass. Sat around us were Kayron, Renzo, Royler and Kyra Gracie as well as Ze Radiola, Kid Peligro and Josh Barnett. Also saw Relson Gracie.

We saw Roger, Xande and Andre Galvao have a few fights each which were class as they were schooling their opponents.

We went to the tattoo convention - nothing new added to the collection but we saw some cool stuff and a burlesque show.

We then made the trek to Hooters to watch the UFC and it was full of people from the UK at the Mundials so it was a good atmosphere. Anyway we said our goodbyes to Jez as we'll not see him until we're back in Newcastle.

Mundials Day 5

We met up with the Jezmeister and went to Universal Studios. It was hilarious. We went in the house of horrors and Jez and Lisa were screaming like girls - Jez even hid behind Lisa. We went on all the rides and got absolutely soaked. We went in this photo booth and you can get your face imposed on celeb posters. I get myself on the cover of Muscle and Fitness magazine which looks mental and Jez is now Jez The Barbarian. It looks like we've both been hitting the roids all week.

Tomorrow (Sat) the plan is

Hook up with Jez and go watch the black and brown absolutes in the morning.

Then in the afternoon there is this conference called Iron and Ink. It's a massive tattoo convention but it has all custom American power cars and classic automobiles and motorbikes as well. To top it off there's a 50's pin up style model contest/beauty pageant so that'll be cool. Hopefully get some more ink - trying to talk Lisa and Jez into getting their first tattoos as well (not gonna hold my breath though)

Then at 7pm the UFC is on pay per view. The only bar we can find that is showing it is Hooters so we're all going to make the sacrifice and go there to watch it - it's a hard life

Mundials - Full Thursday results

Check them out HERE

Found them while looking to see if any other UK guys placed, none I can see! - Looking forward to seeing purple, brown and black belt results too.

Mundials Day 3 & 4

Day 3

A bit boring really - a little jetlag to get over and then just chilled so Lisa was ready for the tournament.

Day 4

Jez is safe and sound. We met him at the Pyramid and he told us of his adventures. He's trained at a couple of clubs who've let him train for free. Gracie Academy was expensive, $40 for one session, but he tapped several of their blue belts out. The Machado Academy were very unwelcoming and kept asking him loads of questions so he didn't train with them.

Anyway the Mundials.

Lisa got drew against the Croatian power lifter in the quarter finals and took her to school. The girl was holding her at arms length to stop Lisa going for the takedown or throw so Lisa pulled off the sweetest flying armbar and got a massive cheer from the crowd. The girl tore out of it as Lisa tried to lock it on and Lisa took top and passed her guard and secured on for the points win.

The semi finals was a draw against American Elite fighter Samantha Faulhaber. This was a fight of attrition. The American jumped guard and clamped on. Lisa fought to pass continuously and her opponent had a very similar game to Lisa and kept recovering. It went like that for the first 5 minutes with no scoring. With one minute to go Samantha tried a sweep which Lisa defended. She then pulled Lisa into the triangle as she recovered base and Lisa defended it with a strong posture and pulling down on the knee. Lisa popped her head out and was passing to side when the whistle went. No score on the board and the referee signals advantage to the American for the submission attempt so Lisa lost by the advantage point.

Lisa won the Bronze medal at the Mundials. We drank Acai juice to celebrate.

Hope everyone is OK at home. We're hooking up with Jez tomorrow and going to Universal Studios together. We may go and watch the Brown and Black belts on Saturday so we'll keep you updated.

Bri's new class

From Monday 9th June there will be a new BJJ class starting at the Felling community centre taught by Brian Blewitt. For those that don't know, Bri is one of Dave's purple belts and a great teacher too. Classes will be on Monday and Thursdays both days running from 7pm - 9pm..

Any questions see Bri at the club or email in and I'll ask Bri

Mundials Trip Day 2

Up early and our hotel has free breakfast, not as exciting as the Portugal one but good all the less. They have apple that are about the size of a grapefruit.

We went to an Aquarium and had a wander round the rest of Long Beach which was really cool. Then we decided to go to Hollywood and see all the pavement stars. We got a train which went through Compton and South Central LA - the houses are tiny, think a UK sized garage and that's what people are living in.

Anyway we get off the train and bump straight into the Pussycat Dolls, they were making a new video in the middle of the street. I got some photos with one of them :) It's a really good looking woman with a chubby, bald English bloke. Also found a Vegan restauraunt so Lisa is well happy she said she's having cherry pie and ice cream with cookies on Friday so she'll be heavier for the Absolute!!!

Anyway take care - we'll update tomorrow but just a lazy day planned.

ADCC UK Nationals - Cheaper entry

Jude has just posted on the EFN sports forums that entry to the ADCC UK nationals for all GAA (grappling arts association) members is now only £20, If your thinking of entering its cheap for a national competition which could lead to a big international comp.

Check out all the details HERE

Mundials Trip Day 1

What a long day it's 8pm LA time now but 4am in Newcastle.

We got dropped off at 12am Monday to catch our flight and arrived in LA at 9pm UK time so 21 hours of travelling.

We got on the plane at Heathrow to fly to LA and Mauricio Gomes is sat next to us for the flight - strange co-incidence. The flight was 11 hours, but there was free movies so watched tons of TV.

We had fun at US customs as Lisa had an apple in her bag so we had to do extra bag searches and paperwork as you can't bring fruit into the country.

We've had a good wander around - found Hooters and they were showing MMA on TV so we had to get some tea.

Anyway I'm off to bed as I'm wrecked - will post some more stuff tomorrow or Wednesday as there is computer access in the hotel.
